It might help to think of it more as a "status report written in outline format."

If you want to take a look at the ice cream parlor sample proposal that is on amatosphere.com, a chronological outline of that project might look something like this:

September 2008:
- 9th: Did an online search on Google Maps to find nearby ice cream parlors to my home address; also made a list of possible informants.
- 10th: Met with the manager of five ice cream parlors today-- three gave me permission to ask their employees questions, and one did not (unless I agreed to purchase some ice cream while I was observing).
15th: Observed Joe's Ice Cream Shack from 3-5 p.m., and also sat in the parking lot during "closing time" to people-watch.
16th: Observed Maggie's Marvelous Ice Cream Parlor employee from 6-7 p.m. Observed clean up rituals and interviewed employee #1.
17th: Participated in the 10th Annual Ice Cream Tower-athon at Ben and Jerry's between 1-4pm. Built a two story ice cream cake with area children. What an event!

October 2008:
- 29th: Have scheduled three interviews-- one for November 1 at 5 pm at the outside terrace of Kilwin's Old Fashioned Soda Shoppe.
- 7th: Had my second interview today from 12-1pm with a parent who was having their child's birthday party at Kilwin's Shoppe. Also interviewed the staff involved with the children's party. Participated in making balloon sculptures.
