This
course will be offered in Spring of 2009.
Section 57315; M 2:00-4:50 pm with Dr. Greta Foff
The purpose of this course is to help you develop geographical skills
to better understand and appreciate the place where you live and
places around the world as well as the interconnections among them.
We
explore detailed case studies that show how demographic, environmental,
cultural, social, political, and economic processes shape the geography
of the world around us. You will discover that geography is not
just about finding places on a map, but explores how geographical
relationships are fundamental parts of all aspects of our lives.
We
wil explore as a class how different types of landscapes are constructed
through power and culture, and how those landscapes are experienced
differently by groups around the world. We will also critically
analyze the idea of "development" through several case
studies from the United Nations Development Programme.
The
topics we explore in this class lead directly into topics studied
in numerous other classes including health, economics, political
science, history, civil engineering, and gender studies among others.
